This is a completely independent operation, not owned or controlled by any other company, so we can give you our best impartial advice without needing to push anybody's corporate point of view. This site is written for the typical car owner who is actively involved in directing the maintenance and care of his car(s).

The factory is not the boss, the dealer is not the boss, and your local auto repair shop is not the boss: you are. You may choose to delegate some of your automotive decisions to someone you trust, or you may keep them all to yourself. But either way, the ultimate responsibility is yours. Our job here is to provide useful advice to help you in your decisions.

If you are serious about taking care of your car, you need to have the basic information about it. Also, it is a good idea to let your repair shop(s) know that you have this information, because it lets them know that you are interested in your car and that you are capable of checking up on the things they tell you.

The Haynes Book For Your Car - Buy it from your local auto parts store, or bookstore, or find it online using the Amazon search box below. In the box, please enter the words "Haynes" plus the make and model of your car, like this:

The Chilton Book For Your Car - Buy it from your local auto parts store, or bookstore, or find it online using the Amazon search box above. In the box, please enter the words "Chilton" plus the make and model of your car, like this:

The Haynes books are usually a little bit easier than the Chilton books, and have more pictures. The Chilton books are more difficult. Together, they give you a good idea of what is going on with your car.

SOMETIMES YOU MAY RUN INTO DIFFICULTIES AND NEED TO SHOW SOME MUSCLE

Some auto repair shops are not the easiest places to get along with. Sometimes they might be pushy, inconsiderate, and try to take advantge of you, figuring they have you at their mercy.

If you sincerely try to resolve any conflicts fairly and reasonably, but they will not cooperate, you might find it necessary to show a little muscle.

Perhaps the easiest thing for you to do is to threaten to write a letter and send it to people who are higher up in the organization than the people who are giving you trouble. Very few employees want their boss's boss to get on their case about a customer relations problem. Also, you can threaten to send copies to the local media and Better Business Bureau. I once worked in a shop where the manager was so afraid of someone starting trouble with his boss that he would give away almost anything to keep people from writing the letters they threatened to write.

Better yet, if you have a lawyer or some kind of legal services provider such as Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., you can threaten to have THEM write a letter. Almost nobody wants to have the lawyers come after them if they can avoid it.

You do, however, have a moral obligation not to take advantage of your strength in these situations. Be fair and reasonable and considerate of the other person's situation, even if you think he was trying to take advantage of you. Everybody makes mistakes sometimes, and if you forgive him, maybe God will forgive you some time when you need forgiveness.
