"For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth

             life." (John 3:16 KJV)

Today we remember the crucifixion of Jesus.

INTO THE WOODS MY MASTER WENT - by Sidney Lanier (1880)
                          Public Domain
     _________________________________________________________________

Into the woods my Master went,
           Clean forspent, forspent,
Into the woods my Master came,
           Forspent with love and shame.
But the olives they were not blind to Him.
The little grey leaves were kind to Him,
The thorn tree had a mind to Him,
When into the woods He came.
Out of the woods my Master came
           And He was well content;
Out of the woods my Master came,
         Content with death and shame.
When death and shame would woo Him last,
From under the trees they drew Him last,
'twas on a tree they slew Him last
When out of the woods He came.

Scriptural Authority For This Chapel

"This is my commandment, That ye love one another,
as I have loved you." (John 15:12 KJV)

This chapel allows me the opportunity to love you the best way I know how, by sharing the Lord with you in worship.

Invocation - Inviting the Lord To Be With Us Openly

"For where two or three are gathered in my name, there
am I in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20 KJV)
Let's pray together now, to welcome the Lord to join us openly as we worship Him.

O Lord, we pray that You will join us now,
As we have come together in Your name.
Please let us know that You are really here,
And help us to be pleasing in Your sight.
In Jesus' holy name we pray, Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

The Lord, Himself, taught us to pray like this . . .

                     The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
            hallowed be thy Name,
            thy kingdom come,
            thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
          And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
            but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
            for ever and ever. Amen.
Source: Book Of Common Prayer, based on
                              Matthew 6:9-13

                       *             *           *

"For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father
will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their
trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
          (Matthew 6:14-15 KJV)

                       *             *           *

The Apostles' Creed

This historic affirmation of faith comes to us from the early centuries of the Christian church.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
      Maker of heaven and earth:
      And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
      Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit;
      Born of the Virgin Mary,
      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      Was crucified, dead, and buried;
      He descended into hell;
      The third day he rose again from the dead;
      He ascended into heaven
      And sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
      I believe in the Holy Spirit;
      The holy catholic church; *
      The communion of saints;
      The forgiveness of sins;
      The resurrection of the body;
      And the life everlasting.
                             Amen.

                * Note: "catholic church" here means the entire body of
believers in Christ, not just one particular church.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
      Oh . . .
Sometimes it causes me to tremble
           Tremble
                Tremble
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
      Oh . . .
Sometimes it causes me to tremble
           Tremble
                Tremble
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Were you there when they pierced Him in the side?
Were you there when they pierced Him in the side?
      Oh . . .
Sometimes it causes me to tremble
           Tremble
                Tremble
Were you there when they pierced Him in the side?

Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
      Oh . . .
Sometimes it causes me to tremble
           Tremble
                Tremble
Were you there when the sun refused to shine?

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
      Oh . . .
Sometimes it causes me to tremble
           Tremble
                Tremble
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

It Is False Doctrine To Teach That We Must Suffer As Christ Suffered In Order To Be Worthy Of Salvation

There is a false doctrine, taught by some, which teaches that we must suffer as Christ suffered in order to be worthy of salvation. This doctrine is based on a false connection between the cup Jesus gave to the twelve to drink at the last supper and the cup He prayed about in Gethsemane.

In reality, these are two completely different cups, with two completely different purposes.

With the first cup, cited in Matthew 26:27-28, Jesus is instructing us to take Him inside of us by drinking His blood (the wine) and eating His body (the bread.) This instruction is the basis for Holy Communion, which has been faithfully observed since the founding of His Church.

         _____________________________________________________________

        MATTHEW 26:27-28 (KJV)
        27
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them,
               saying, Drink ye all of it;
        28
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed
for many for the remission of sins.
         _____________________________________________________________

The second cup, cited in Matthew 26:39, refers to God's will that Jesus give Himself as a sacrifice for us. This is the essence of His plan for our salvation.
"And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and
prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this
cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou
               wilt." (Matthew 26:39 KJV)

It is a terrible mistake to think that these two different cups refer to the same thing. The only similarity between them is the word "cup."

Jesus was required by God to suffer on the cross in our behalf. Because He has already suffered for us, we do not need to suffer if we accept Him as our Savior. This is the essential concept of salvation by faith in Christ: that He paid the price for us so that we do not have to pay it. If we ourselves still must suffer for our salvation, what did Jesus accomplish for us? If we ourselves must suffer to obtain our salvation, then what use is the "free gift" of salvation, given to those who believe in Jesus?

        ROMANS 5:15-17 (KJV)
        15
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if
through the offence of one many be dead, much more the
grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man,
Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
        16
And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for
the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift
is of many offences unto justification.
        17
For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much
more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift
of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus
               Christ.)
         _____________________________________________________________

Jesus paid the full price for us. We are not required to suffer or to strive or to work hard or to earn our own salvation in any way. It is a gift from God, given to those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord. We do not earn it by our own efforts or suffering or exertions in any way. It comes to us through faith alone, by the grace of God.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting
             life." (John 3:16 KJV)

Salvation comes by faith alone, not by works, lest anyone should boast.
        --------------------------------------------------------------
        EPHESIANS 2:8-9 (KJV)

        8
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God:
        9
Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Blessings to you in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Exhortation For Today

"But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any
one of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin."
    (Hebrews 3:13 KJV)

"Open Up All Parts Of Your Life To The Lord"

If you give yourself to Him, really do it! Don't hold anything
back. Don't keep some private rooms in your life to yourself.
Exclude Him from *nothing* you do.
If He doesn't like something you are doing, He will tell you
and He will work with you to clean it up to His satisfaction.
On the other hand, you may be surprised, as I was, at the things
which are perfectly okay with Him for you to do, as long as
He is there with you, as your Lord.

Reading Of The Scriptures

Now let us join together as we read more from God's holy word, the Bible. The Lord inhabits His word, and as we read it and take it into ourselves, He grows ever stronger within us.

       LUKE 23 (RSV)

                      The Crucifixion Of Jesus
         _____________________________________________________________

        1
Then the whole company of them arose, and brought him
               before Pilate.
        2
And they began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man
perverting our nation, and forbidding us to give tribute
to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king."
        3
And Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" And
he answered him, "You have said so."
        4
And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes,
"I find no crime in this man."
        5
But they were urgent, saying, "He stirs up the people,
teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this
               place."
        6
When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a
               Galilean.
        7
And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's
jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself
               in Jerusalem at that time.
        8
When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long
desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he
was hoping to see some sign done by him.
        9
So he questioned him at some length; but he made no
               answer.
        10
The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently
               accusing him.
        11
And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and
mocked him; then, arraying him in gorgeous apparel, he
               sent him back to Pilate.
        12
And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that
very day, for before this they had been at enmity with
               each other.
        13
Pilate then called together the chief priests and the
               rulers and the people,
        14
and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was
perverting the people; and after examining him before you,
behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your
               charges against him;
        15
neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Behold,
               nothing deserving death has been done by him;
        16
I will therefore chastise him and release him."
        17
        18
But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and
               release to us Barab'bas" --
        19
a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection
started in the city, and for murder.
        20
Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release
               Jesus;
        21
but they shouted out, "Crucify, crucify him!"
        22
A third time he said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?
I have found in him no crime deserving death; I will
therefore chastise him and release him."
        23
But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he
should be crucified. And their voices prevailed.
        24
So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be
               granted.
        25
He released the man who had been thrown into prison for
insurrection and murder, whom they asked for; but Jesus he
               delivered up to their will.
        26
And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of
Cyre'ne, who was coming in from the country, and laid on
him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.
        27
And there followed him a great multitude of the people,
and of women who bewailed and lamented him.
        28
But Jesus turning to them said, "Daughters of Jerusalem,
do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your
               children.
        29
For behold, the days are coming when they will say,
'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore,
and the breasts that never gave suck!'
        30
Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on
us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us.'
        31
For if they do this when the wood is green, what will
               happen when it is dry?"
        32
Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be
               put to death with him.
        33
And when they came to the place which is called The Skull,
there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the
right and one on the left.
        34
And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not
what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments.
        35
And the people stood by, watching; but the rulers scoffed
at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if
he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!"
        36
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him
               vinegar,
        37
and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save
               yourself!"
        38
There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King
               of the Jews."
        39
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him,
saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
        40
But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God,
since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?
        41
And we indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward
of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."
        42
And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your
               kingdom."
        43
And he said to him, "Truly, I say to you, today you will
               be with me in Paradise."
        44
It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness
over the whole land until the ninth hour,
        45
while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the
               temple was torn in two.
        46
Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into
thy hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he
               breathed his last.
        47
Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he
praised God, and said, "Certainly this man was innocent!"
        48
And all the multitudes who assembled to see the sight,
when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating
               their breasts.
        49
And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed
him from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things.
        50
Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of
Arimathe'a. He was a member of the council, a good and
               righteous man,
        51
who had not consented to their purpose and deed, and he
was looking for the kingdom of God.
        52
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
        53
Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud, and
laid him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet
               been laid.
        54
It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was
               beginning.
        55
The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and
               saw the tomb, and how his body was laid;
        56
then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On
the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

And here is a second account.

       MATTHEW 27 (RSV)

                        The Crucifixion Of Jesus
         _____________________________________________________________

       Matthew 27
        1
When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of
               the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death;
        2
and they bound him and led him away and delivered him to
               Pilate the governor.
        3
When Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he
repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to
the chief priests and the elders,
        4
saying, "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood." They
said, "What is that to us? See to it yourself."
        5
And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he
departed; and he went and hanged himself.
        6
But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said,
"It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since
               they are blood money."
        7
So they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's
               field, to bury strangers in.
        8
Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to
               this day.
        9
Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet
Jeremiah, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of
silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by
some of the sons of Israel,
        10
and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord
               directed me."
        11
Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor
asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said,
               "You have said so."
        12
But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders,
               he made no answer.
        13
Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many things
               they testify against you?"
        14
But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge; so
               that the governor wondered greatly.
        15
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release
for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted.
        16
And they had then a notorious prisoner, called Barab'bas.
        17
So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, "Whom do
you want me to release for you, Barab'bas or Jesus who is
               called Christ?"
        18
For he knew that it was out of envy that they had
               delivered him up.
        19
Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his
wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that
righteous man, for I have suffered much over him today in
               a dream."
        20
Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the people
to ask for Barab'bas and destroy Jesus.
        21
The governor again said to them, "Which of the two do you
want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barab'bas."
        22
Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who
is called Christ?" They all said, "Let him be crucified."
        23
And he said, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they
shouted all the more, "Let him be crucified."
        24
So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather
that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his
hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this
man's blood; see to it yourselves."
        25
And all the people answered, "His blood be on us and on
               our children!"
        26
Then he released for them Barab'bas, and having scourged
Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
        27
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the
praetorium, and they gathered the whole battalion before
               him.
        28
And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe upon him,
        29
and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on his head,
and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him
they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
        30
And they spat upon him, and took the reed and struck him
               on the head.
        31
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the
robe, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to
               crucify him.
        32
As they went out, they came upon a man of Cyre'ne, Simon
by name; this man they compelled to carry his cross.
        33
And when they came to a place called Gol'gotha (which
means the place of a skull),
        34
they offered him wine to drink, mingled with gall; but
when he tasted it, he would not drink it.
        35
And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments
               among them by casting lots;
        36
then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
        37
And over his head they put the charge against him, which
read, "This is Jesus the King of the Jews."
        38
Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right
               and one on the left.
        39
And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads
        40
and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and build it
in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God,
               come down from the cross."
        41
So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders,
               mocked him, saying,
        42
"He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King
of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we
               will believe in him.
        43
He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires
him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
        44
And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled
               him in the same way.
        45
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the
               land until the ninth hour.
        46
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice,
"Eli, Eli, la'ma sabach-tha'ni?" that is, "My God, my God,
               why hast thou forsaken me?"
        47
And some of the bystanders hearing it said, "This man is
               calling Eli'jah."
        48
And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it
with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to
               drink.
        49
But the others said, "Wait, let us see whether Eli'jah
               will come to save him."
        50
And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his
               spirit.
        51
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two,
from top to bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks
               were split;
        52
the tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints
who had fallen asleep were raised,
        53
and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they
went into the holy city and appeared to many.
        54
When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping
watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place,
they were filled with awe, and said, "Truly this was the
               Son of God!"
        55
There were also many women there, looking on from afar,
               who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him;
        56
among whom were Mary Mag'dalene, and Mary the mother of
James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zeb'edee.
        57
When it was evening, there came a rich man from
Arimathe'a, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of
               Jesus.
        58
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then
Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
        59
And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen
               shroud,
        60
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the
rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb,
               and departed.
        61
Mary Mag'dalene and the other Mary were there, sitting
               opposite the sepulchre.
        62
Next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief
priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
        63
and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while
he was still alive, 'After three days I will rise again.'
        64
Therefore order the sepulchre to be made secure until the
third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away, and
tell the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the
last fraud will be worse than the first."
        65
Pilate said to them, "You have a guard of soldiers; go,
make it as secure as you can."
        66
So they went and made the sepulchre secure by sealing the
               stone and setting a guard.

Prayer For You

"To Those Who Think That They Have Sold Their Soul"

To those who think that they have sold their soul,
To Satan, for a price they cannot pay,
I have some news that you might want to hear:
                     *              *               *
Your "owner" has deceived you once again:
You have no contract that you must fulfill.
The Lord has paid the total price for you,
By dying, with his hands nailed to a board,
And so He showed His faithful love for you.
Your "owner" doesn't care for you at all,
He gets his jollies leading you to hell.
He wants to see you writhe and scream in pain.
He hates all humans more than you can know.
                     *              *               *
So if you sold your soul, then follow this:
Divest yourself of what you did receive,
Just give it back, or throw it all away,
And don't look back to see where it did go.
Then turn your face to Jesus, and repent.
Accept Him as your Lord, and follow Him.
He will forgive you of your many sins,
And He will give you life to start anew.
                     *              *               *
Then Satan will be seen for what he is:
               A snarling dog, confined behind a fence;
He barks and barks, but no one even cares.
In Jesus' holy name, I pray for you.

WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS - by Isaac Watts, 1707
                                      Public Domain

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
              Save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
See, from His head, His hands, His feet,
              Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
              That were a present far too small;
              Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
                                 Amen.

Blessings to you in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Benediction

As we complete our worship service today, I leave you with this blessing . . .

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto
          thee:

The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee
          peace.

                                (Numbers 6:24-26 KJV)

Go with His love, and good-bye until tomorrow, Lord willing.
