The Bible teaches us that "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17 RSV) This affirms that competitive discussion helps both sides of any question, by forcing each side to respond to challenges. Therefore, everyone benefits when political opponents discuss the issues in fair and open competition. I hope that the messages posted here will contribute to this sharpening process, to the benefit of all. Blessings to you, whatever your positions may be.

The Golden Rule is the foundation of Democracy, because the Golden Rule directs us to give the same power to others as we would like to have for ourselves, namely, the power to make decisions in matters affecting our lives. How much power? The same as we have ourselves, and this leads immediately to the idea of "one person, one vote," with all votes being of equal weight. So, Democracy is the natural result of applying the Golden Rule to the question: "What kind of government should we have?" Similarly, the Golden Rule leads directly to the idea of equality of all people under the law.
The Golden Rule Leads To "The Greatest Good For The Greatest Number, With Basic Rights For All." "TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED." When it is applied to Politics, the Golden Rule leads to policies which create "The Greatest Good For The Greatest Number, With Basic Rights For All." Thus, total good is maximized and none are denied their basic rights in life. This is a perfect formula for happiness and social stability anywhere!
The tragic Republican flaw: "I earned it myself, so it belongs only to me." Many Republicans have trouble with the idea of "basic rights for all," because they think that people on the bottom of society do not have economic rights of any kind unless they themselves "earned them." Too bad. This is the tragic flaw in Republican thinking - "I earned it myself, so it belongs only to me!" By this Republican kind of thinking, only the people on top are entitled to much of anything, because they supposedly "earned it themselves," which is total nonsense. By themselves, they couldn't do anything, except maybe build a cabin out of trees and plant some corn in the ground and try to kill wild animals by throwing rocks at them. This is what you can achieve by yourself. Everything beyond this depends on an intricate social context which has been built up over the years by millions of different people, such as soldiers, laborers, policemen, firemen, inventors, doctors, lawyers, factory workers. The individual Republican who thinks he "earned it himself," is tragically deluded. Without the social context, built by others, he could do nothing. The social context enables the wealthy person to earn his fortune; the social context deserves its fair percentage.
AS DEMOCRATS AND AS AMERICANS, WE NEED TO IMMERSE OURSELVES IN THE GOLDEN RULE - "TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED" - AND MAKE IT THE CENTER OF ALL OUR POLICIES. This gives us the unassailable high moral ground, and insures that we never go far wrong in anything we try to do!
