Dark and cheerless is the morn Unaccompanied by thee; Joyless is the day's return, Till thy mercy's beams I see; Till they inward light impart, Glad my eyes, and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine, Pierce the gloom of sin and grief; Fill me, Radiancy Divine, Scatter all my unbelief; More and more thyself display, Shining to the perfect day. * * * NOTE: This text has largely dropped out of current usage, and it is time that it be restored. If you spend a little effort understanding the words, you will see how powerful and beautiful they are. When sung, it has usually been to the tune LUX PRIMA, by Charles F. Gounod (1872). Gounod probably had the same reaction I did: This is a great poem, but it needs another melody. My new hymn tune OMNIA GLORIA was directly inspired by this text, when I first read the words. WEM P.
