Almost nobody seems to know this fact, but it is true, according to the Bible: Disciples of Jesus can have authority to forgive sins. Here's how it works . . .

THE FIVE CONDITIONS OF BEING A DISCIPLE OF JESUS

A "Disciple of Jesus" is anyone who meets these five conditions:

1. He is a Christian, that is, he meets the conditions of salvation as set forth in Romans 10:9.

"because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and
believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will
       be saved." (Romans 10:9 RSV)

2. He has asked for and received the Holy Spirit into his heart. Thus he is born again into a new life in Christ Jesus.

"Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
       (John 3:7 KJV)

3. He has forgiven all people of all their offenses against him. Thus God can freely forgive all of his offenses.

                     MATTHEW 6:14-15 (KJV)
   14
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father
          will also forgive you:
   15
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your
          Father forgive your trespasses.

4. He has surrendered control of his life to the Lord. Thus he desires to follow the will of the Lord in all ways at all times.

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them,
and they follow me;" (John 10:27 RSV)

5. He has been baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as specified in The Great Commission.

MATTHEW 28:18-20 (RSV) - The Great Commission

         _____________________________________________________________

        18
And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven
and on earth has been given to me.
        19
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
               Holy Spirit,
        20
               teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

AUTHORITY OF HIS DISCIPLES TO FORGIVE SINS

If you are a Disciple of Jesus, as shown above, you can have authority from Him to forgive sins. "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven." (John 20:23a RSV) This is what He told his disciples. But now the original twelve are gone, and we remain, His present-day disciples. We can have all the same authority that He gave to the original twelve, if He offers it and we accept it and receive it. And this includes the authority to forgive sins.

        JOHN 20:21-23 (RSV)

         _____________________________________________________________

        21
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the
Father has sent me, even so I send you."
        22
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said
to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
        23
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you
retain the sins of any, they are retained."
         _____________________________________________________________

But you may say, "What if one Disciple forgives a sin but another Disciple retains that same sin. Is it forgiven or not?" The answer is this: As soon as any one Disciple forgives a sin, it is forgiven, even if other Disciples have previously retained that same sin. And once a sin is forgiven, it cannot be reinstated.
