The Best Way To Love God

THE BEST WAY TO LOVE GOD IS TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.

Jesus clearly taught that love for God is the most important thing and that love for neighbor is just like it, almost the same thing.

The Great Commandment, Matthew 22:35-40 (RSV)
         _____________________________________________________________

        35
And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test
               him.
        36
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?"
        37
And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with
all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
               mind.
        38
This is the great and first commandment.
        39
And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as
               yourself.
        40
On these two commandments depend all the law and the
               prophets."
         _____________________________________________________________

It is fairly easy to know how to love our neighbor as ourself. We have "The Golden Rule," which is clearly expressed as "DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU." This is God's ethics for mankind, our rule for dealing with each other.

The Golden Rule is given twice in the Bible so we cannot miss it.

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men
should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this
is the law and the prophets." (Matthew 7:12 KJV)
"And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye
also to them likewise." (Luke 6:31 KJV)
So "loving our neighbor as ourself" is simple and easy to understand.

But how do we love God? Loving God is the very most important thing. So how are we supposed to do it?

The Bible gives us the answer: "FOR THIS IS THE LOVE OF GOD, THAT WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. AND HIS COMMANDMENTS ARE NOT BURDENSOME." (1 John 5:3 RSV)

What, then are His commandments that we are supposed to keep? Are we bound by every commandment mentioned anywhere in the Bible? Absolutely not! Are we bound by every commandment mentioned in the New Testament? No, not if we believe the Bible itself.

There is only one commandment that we absolutely must keep. All others are fulfilled in it and are subordinate to it. This one alone is sufficient.

         _____________________________________________________________

For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your
neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14 RSV)
         _____________________________________________________________

This sounds easy, like "just be nice to people and you will be okay." But it is more than merely being nice to people. It is loving them the same as you love yourself. It means if there is only one piece of bread to eat and you have it, you must share it with the others with you who are hungry. In practice, this becomes very difficult to do in extreme cases. In fact, it is impossible to do without the Holy Spirit living inside you, guiding and controlling your life. Without the Holy Spirit, we humans almost always put ourselves first.

This is why it is so important to accept Jesus Christ as Lord. Without Him dwelling inside us, we cannot possibly love others as we love ourselves. Thus, we cannot possibly keep the Law.

Without Him, we are doomed.

Blessings to you in Jesus Christ, our Lord.
