What Is The "Public Domain," And What Are Its Benefits ?
"The public domain is a range of abstract materials – commonly referred to as intellectual property – which are not owned or controlled by anyone. The term indicates that these materials are therefore 'public property', and available for anyone to use for any purpose."
The main benefit of Public Domain to society is that it maximizes the free and open use of helpful information which might otherwise not be used by other writers. For instance, every time I write something (like this web page), I am hopeful that other writers will come along and use my words, making something new and better out of them. One vivid example of a Public Domain work being used freely and extensively by society is the King James Bible.
Copyright, on the other hand, says "You may not use these words without paying me for them, except in very limited cases."
