The Revised Standard Version (RSV) is the most widely-accepted Bible in the English language. It is also perhaps the clearest and perhaps the most authoritative of all the English-language Bibles. I have a special love for the Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the Bible, because when I came back to Jesus in 1995, He affirmed His presence in me by leading me to find an abandoned copy of the RSV lying in the middle of a busy street. "You saved it; it will save you," He told me. It was damaged and fragile, and I have it saved in a protective cover, on a bookshelf. And I have other copies of the RSV that I use regularly.

The main advantages of the RSV Bible are that it is a very clear, very scholarly, widely accepted word-for-word translation.

The main problem I have with the RSV is that, for political reasons, I think, the translators inexplicably eliminated the word "begotten" from John 3:16, which is perhaps the most important verse in the entire Bible, considered by many to be the essence of Christianity. This unjustified, unexplained, off-the-wall change ruined the RSV in the minds of some Christians. However, for me it is no big problem: I simply add the word back in, where it belongs.

   For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,
   that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

         John 3:16 (RSV - amended)

To be sure of its theological correctness, you can always view it side-by-side with the fully-authoritative King James Bible.

At any rate, I find myself frequently quoting verses from the RSV in my work on the Internet. I feel very comfortable with it.
