     INTO THE WOODS MY MASTER WENT - by Sidney Lanier (1880)

         Into the woods my Master went,
           Clean forspent, forspent,
         Into the woods my Master came,
           Forspent with love and shame.
             But the olives they were not blind to Him.
             The little grey leaves were kind to Him,
             The thorn tree had a mind to Him,
         When into the woods He came.
         Out of the woods my Master came
           And He was well content;
         Out of the woods my Master came,
         Content with death and shame.
             When death and shame would woo Him last,
             From under the trees they drew Him last,
             'twas on a tree they slew Him last
         When out of the woods He came.

                 O Lord, we know that You are everywhere,
                 And nothing happens that You cannot see,
                 But even so, we pray that You will come
                 And join with us directly at this time.
                 We now will offer up our praise to You,
                 And we do much desire to have You here.
                 In Jesus' holy name we pray, Amen.

Declaration Of Faith

The Apostles' Creed
   This historic affirmation of faith comes to us from the early
   centuries of the Christian church.

      I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
      Maker of heaven and earth:
      And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
      Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost;
      Born of the Virgin Mary,
      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      Was crucified, dead, and buried;
      He descended into hell;
      The third day he rose again from the dead;
      He ascended into heaven
      And sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
      From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
      I believe in the Holy Ghost;
      The holy catholic church;     *
      The communion of saints;
      The forgiveness of sins;
      The resurrection of the body;
      And the life everlasting.

                * Note: "catholic church" here means the entire body of
                  believers in Christ, not just one particular church.

Prayer 4 You

To Use The Power Of Your Spoken Words

          "To Use The Power Of Your Spoken Words"
               You may not know this, but you have a power,
               A special little gift you got from God,
               To greatly make or break somebody's day,
               By what you tell them when they need to hear.
               For people are receptive to your thoughts,
               And ready to believe the things you say.
                 *             *             *
               The Lord wants you to use this power well,
               And if you do, He then will give you more,
               Because you used it as He did intend.
                 *             *             *
               So start today to use this power well,
               And once again, this rule you can apply:
               "Give unto others as you would receive."
               If they are feeling lonely, be a friend;
               If they have suffered loss, then give them gain;
               If they are in temptation, give them strength.
               Your words will cost you nothing but your time,
               Yet you are building treasure with the Lord.
               And when you need it most, He will repay.
                *              *             *
               In Jesus' name I pray these things, Amen.

Reading Of The Scriptures

The Letter of James, Chapter 3

   The Letter Of James
   3:1 My brothers, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive
   the greater condemnation.
   3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word,
   the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
   3:3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us;
   and we turn about their whole body.
   3:4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are
   driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small
   helm, wherever the governor desires.
   3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things.
   Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindles!
   3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue
   among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire
   the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
   3:7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of
   things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed of mankind:
   3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of
   deadly poison.
   3:9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we
   men, which are made after the similitude of God.
   3:10 Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My
   brothers, these things ought not so to be.
   3:11 Does a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and
   3:12 Can the fig tree, my brothers, bear olive berries? either a
   vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
   3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him
   show out of a good conduct his works with meekness of wisdom.
   3:14 But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory
   not, and lie not against the truth.
   3:15 This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual,
   3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every
   evil work.
   3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable,
   gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits,
   without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
   3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that
   make peace.

Poem, "Come Up From The Fields, Father"

A Letter Arrives From The War Zone (1863?)

Come up from the fields father, here's a letter from our Pete,
And come to the front door mother, here's a letter from thy dear son.
Lo, 'tis autumn,
Lo, where the trees, deeper green, yellower and redder,
Cool and sweeten Ohio's villages with leaves fluttering in the
    moderate wind,
Where apples ripe in the orchards hang and grapes on the trellis'd
(Smell you the smell of the grapes on the vines?
Smell you the buckwheat where the bees were lately buzzing?)
Above all, lo, the sky so calm, so transparent after the rain, and
    with wondrous clouds,
Below too, all calm, all vital and beautiful, and the farm prospers
Down in the fields all prospers well,
But now from the fields come father, come at the daughter's call.
And come to the entry mother, to the front door come right away.
Fast as she can she hurries, something ominous, her steps trembling,
She does not tarry to smooth her hair nor adjust her cap.
Open the envelope quickly,
O this is not our son's writing, yet his name is sign'd,
O a strange hand writes for our dear son, O stricken mother's soul!
All swims before her eyes, flashes with black, she catches the main
    words only,
Sentences broken, gunshot wound in the breast, cavalry skirmish,
    taken to hospital,
At present low, but will soon be better.
Ah now the single figure to me,
Amid all teeming and wealthy Ohio with all its cities and farms,
Sickly white in the face and dull in the head, very faint,
By the jamb of a door leans.
Grieve not so, dear mother, (the just-grown daughter speaks through
    her sobs,
The little sisters huddle around speechless and dismay'd,)
See, dearest mother, the letter says Pete will soon be better.
Alas poor boy, he will never be better, (nor may-be needs to be
    better, that brave and simple soul,)
While they stand at home at the door he is dead already,
The only son is dead.
But the mother needs to be better,
She with thin form presently drest in black,
By day her meals untouch'd, then at night fitfully sleeping, often
In the midnight waking, weeping, longing with one deep longing,
O that she might withdraw unnoticed, silent from life escape and
To follow, to seek, to be with her dear dead son.
by Walt Whitman, in LEAVES OF GRASS, 1900

"Take this day, and live it for the Lord."

        Take this day, and live it for the Lord;
        In everything you do, give praise to Him.
        The Lord is mighty, merciful and just.
        He gives us all the strength we ever need.
        We have no reason ever to complain,
        For we are His, and He is in control.

Prayer For You

"Go Ahead And Give Yourself To Christ"

NOTE: When you read this prayer, try to imagine hearing my voice as I
       speak it to you. In this way, the prayer is reactivated, and it
       the same as if I were actually praying for you at that moment.
       (Just like television prayers are reactivated when you watch
       them, although the videotape may have been shot years before.)
                Perhaps you are a Christian even now,
                You go to church and try to do your best,
                You try to put His teachings in your life,
                But still you do not feel that He is yours.
                You do not feel the closeness that you crave.
                If this is you, then say this prayer with me:
                     *             *             *
                O Lord, I want you closer in my life,
                I want you more to be a part of me.
                I want the best relationship with you,
                That anyone on earth could ever have.
                I know that, "as we give, we shall receive,"
                And so I now do give myself to you,
                In full completeness, holding nothing back.
                I'm yours, so you may use me as you will,
                And take whatever things you want from me.
                And now that I did give myself to you,
                I pray that you will give yourself to me,
                As bridegroom gives himself to his new bride.
                In Jesus' holy name I pray, Amen.

How To Find A Real, Live Church

An online church is better than no church at all; but it is even better for most Christians to actually belong to a real, live church, with real, live people. Then, you can have your real church PLUS your online church, so you gain the benefits of both. You can find a church for yourself by clicking HERE! -

O HOLY SPIRIT, ENTER WITHIN ME - by William McGinnis, 1995 -
Public Domain

         O Holy Spirit, enter within me,
         Filling my heart with Thy holy grace;
         Dwelling so sweetly, loving completely,
         Making my body Thy holy place.
         O Holy Spirit, sunlight eternal,
         Brighten my path with Thy holy rays;
         Always unfolding, never witholding,
         Comfort and lead me all of my days.
         And when my life on this Earth is over,
         And when my soul from body is free,
         Keep me forever, leaving me never,
         Taking my soul to heaven with Thee.
