A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD - by Martin Luther (1529), Translated by
                               Frederick H. Hedge (1853).

           A mighty fortress is our God,
           A bulwark never failing;
           Our helper He, amid the flood
           Of mortal ills prevailing.
           For still our ancient foe
           Doth seek to work us woe;
           His craft and pow'r are great,
           And, armed with cruel hate,
           On earth is not his equal.
           Did we in our own strength confide,
           Our striving would be losing,
           Were not the right Man on our side,
           The Man of God's own choosing.
           Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
           Lord Sabaoth His name,
           From age to age the same,
           And He must win the battle.
           And though this world, with devils filled,
           Should threaten to undo us,
           We will not fear, for God hath willed
           His truth to triumph through us.
           The prince of darkness grim -
           We tremble not for him;
           His rage we can endure,
           For lo! his doom is sure;
           One little word shall fell him.

           That word above all earthly pow'rs -
           No thanks to them - abideth;
           The Spirit and the gifts are ours
           Through Him Who with us sideth.
           Let goods and kindred go,
           This mortal life also;
           The body they may kill;
           God's truth abideth still,
           His kingdom is for ever.
                        Amen.

             In Jesus' holy name we pray, Amen.

Declaration Of Faith

The Apostles' Creed
   This historic affirmation of faith comes to us from the early
   centuries of the Christian church.
      I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
      Maker of heaven and earth:
      And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
      Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost;
      Born of the Virgin Mary,
      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      Was crucified, dead, and buried;
      He descended into hell;
      The third day he rose again from the dead;
      He ascended into heaven
      And sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
      From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
      I believe in the Holy Ghost;
      The holy catholic church;     *
      The communion of saints;
      The forgiveness of sins;
      The resurrection of the body;
      And the life everlasting.
                             Amen.
                * Note: "catholic church" here means the entire body of
                  believers in Christ, not just one particular church.

Reading Of The Scriptures

The Good Samaritan

This is the story of the good Samaritan, as recorded in the Bible in
   LUKE chapter 10, verses 25 through 37.
                         The Good Samaritan

   And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tested him, saying,
   Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

   He said unto him, What is written in the law? how do you read
   it?

   And he answering said, You shall love the Lord your God with all
   your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and
   with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.

   And he said unto him, You have answered right: this do, and you
   shall live.

   But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is
   my neighbor?

   And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem
   to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his
   clothing, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

   And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and
   when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

   And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked
   on him, and passed by on the other side.

   But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and
   when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

   And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and
   wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and
   took care of him.

   And on the next day when he departed, he took out two denarii,
   and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and
   whatsoever you spend more, when I come again, I will repay you.

   Which now of these three, think you, was neighbor unto him that
   fell among the thieves?

   And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto
   him, Go, and do likewise.
              ###

Here ends the story of the good Samaritan.

Teachings

How To Love Strangers

"Give them what they ask for; give them what they really want; give them what they need."

First, Give Them What They Ask For

When a stranger asks you for something, give it to him, unless you have a really good reason not to. This is the first and most important level of loving someone: give him what he asks for. Don't ask him why he wants it. Don't pass judgment on him or his motives. Simply give him what he asks for. This comes first. Make it your personal policy to grant direct requests: if somebody asks you for something, give it to him. Get in the habit of saying "Yes" to requests.

Jesus was very clear on this point:

         _____________________________________________________________

      "Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who
       wants to borrow from you." (Matthew 5:42 NASB)
       _____________________________________________________________

Next, Give Them What They Really Want

Many times people are afraid to ask for what they really want. So after you have given them whatever they ask for, go a step farther and try to determine what they really want. The easiest way is simply to ask: "What do you really want?" Then, within your abilities, give them what they really want.

Give Them What They Need

Many people are reluctant to ask for help, even if they need it very much. We should learn to be sensitive to the needs of others and provide for them, even if they do not ask for our help. But be careful about assuming too much: sometimes they would really prefer to do it themselves rather than to accept our help. Many older people, for instance, do not want help in getting in and out of cars, even though they appear to need help. They would rather do it themselves.

Always Follow The Law Of Love and The Golden Rule

The Law Of Love fulfills all of God's law for mankind in this one saying, "Love your neighbor as yourself." The Golden Rule puts The Law Of Love into action: "Treat others as you would like to be treated." The Law Of Love and The Golden Rule are really the same thing, expressed in two different ways.
                             The Law Of Love
       For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, "You shall love your
       neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:14 RSV)

                             The Golden Rule

      "So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for
       this is the law and the prophets." (Matthew 7:12 RSV)

                                     <><

But What About Preaching The Gospel? Doesn't That Come First?

Some Christians believe that everybody needs Jesus Christ more than anything else, therefore we should always preach the Gospel first, before we help people in any other way. What about that?

Yes, it is true that Jesus Christ is more important than anything else. But we should never use this fact as an excuse not to help people who have other needs of immediate high priority. If someone needs food, feed him first. Then tell him about Christ when he is in a better position to listen.

BREATHE ON ME, BREATH OF GOD - by Edwin Hatch (1835-1889)
                                   Public Domain
           Breathe on me, Breath of God,
           Fill me with life anew,
           That I may love what Thou dost love,
           And do what Thou wouldst do.
           Breathe on me, Breath of God,
           Until my heart is pure,
           Until my will is one with Thine,
           To do and to endure.
           Breathe on me, Breath of God,
           Till I am wholly Thine,
           Until this earthly part of me
           Glows with Thy fire divine.
           Breathe on me, Breath of God,
           So shall I never die,
           But live with Thee the perfect life
           Of Thine eternity.
                           Amen.
Blessings to you in Jesus Christ our Lord,

Exhortation

"Take This Day And Live It For The Lord"
                    Take this day, and live it for the Lord;
                    In everything you do, give praise to Him.
                    The Lord is mighty, merciful and just.
                    He gives us all the strength we ever need.
                    We have no reason ever to complain,
                    For we are His, and He is in control.

Prayer For You

"I Pray That You Will Take The Time Today"
NOTE: When you read this prayer, try to imagine my voice as I
      speak it to you. In this way, the prayer is reactivated,
      and it is the same as if I were actually praying for you
      at that moment.
       I pray that you will take the time today
       To open up your eyes, and clearly see
       And open up your heart, and surely feel
       And open up your mind, and understand
       Your place within the Universe of God.
       For He created you, and not yourself;
       And He created others, just like you,
       With needs and feelings just the same as yours.
       They may seem insignificant to you,
       But God may love them more than He loves you!
       And if you love them as you love yourself,
       Then He will love you greatly in return.
       But if you treat them harshly, with contempt,
       Then He will treat you harshly in return.
       For this is Justice, clear as it can get:
       "You will receive exactly as you give."
       The Lord is not impressed with who you are.
       In fact, He hates the arrogant and proud.
       The boastful warrior with a mighty sword
       Will surely fall and surely turn to dust.
       In Jesus' name I pray for you today.

Words, Music, Arrangement and MIDI sequence by Bill McGinnis, 1995, Public Domain.

                  "When Jesus Comes Into Your Heart"
                 1. When Jesus comes into your heart,
                    What a wonderful joy you will find!
                       Your burdens He bears,
                       Your sorrows He shares,
                    He comforts your soul and your mind.

                       Chorus: When Jesus, when Jesus,
                               When Jesus comes into your heart.
                               When Jesus, when Jesus,
                               When Jesus comes into your heart.

                 2. When Jesus comes into your heart,
                    All your doubt and despair will be gone!
                       He leads you to see
                       The way you should be,
                    He shows you the path to go on.
                       Chorus:
                3. I want my dear Savior to be
                   Together forever with me.
                      I want Him to stay
                      And show me the way
                   From here to eternity.
