Shall We Gather At The River?

Words and music by Rev. Robert Lowry (1826-1899); Public Domain
   Shall we gather at the river,
   Where bright angel feet have trod;
   With its crystal tide forever
   Flowing by the throne of God?
     Yes, we'll gather at the river,
     The beautiful, the beautiful river;
     Gather with the saints at the river
     That flows by the throne of God.
  On the margin of the river,
  Washing up its silver spray,
  We will walk and worship ever,
  All the happy golden day.
  Ere we reach the shining river,
  Lay we every burden down;
  Grace our spirits will deliver,
  And provide a robe and crown.
  Soon we'll reach the shining river,
  Soon our pilgrimage will cease,
  Soon our happy hearts will quiver
  With the melody of peace.

   The Essence Of Christianity
            "For God so loved the world, that he gave his
             only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
             in him should not perish, but have everlasting
             life." (John 3:16 KJV) Commentary

       O Lord, we come together in Your name,
       And as You promised, we know You are here.
       We now invite you here to stay with us,
       And linger as we tell you of our love.
       In Jesus' holy name we pray, Amen.

Declaration Of Faith

The Apostles' Creed
   This historic affirmation of faith comes to us from the early
   centuries of the Christian church.
      I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
      Maker of heaven and earth:
      And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
      Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost;
      Born of the Virgin Mary,
      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      Was crucified, dead, and buried;
      He descended into hell;
      The third day he rose again from the dead;
      He ascended into heaven
      And sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
      From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
      I believe in the Holy Ghost;
      The holy catholic church;     *
      The communion of saints;
      The forgiveness of sins;
      The resurrection of the body;
      And the life everlasting.
                * Note: "catholic church" here means the entire body of
                  believers in Christ, not just one particular church.

Scriptures And Teachings

The Lord Sometimes Repents And Changes His Mind

The more we know Him, the more we love Him. Sometimes, doctrines of men get in the way of really knowing Him. For instance, some people hold the doctrine that the Lord never changes His mind about anything, that once He says something, there can be no changing of His mind.

This doctrine is incorrect, as the following scriptures will show. The Lord can and does change His mind on things, depending on what happens.

At the very first, He became sorry that He created us.

             Genesis 6:6 KJV
                    And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the
                    earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

He changed His mind about Saul's being king.
             1 Samuel 15:11 KJV
                    It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king:
                    for he is turned back from following me, and hath not
                    performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and
                    he cried unto the LORD all night.

And there are many other examples where He changed His mind or considered changing His mind, based on things that happened.
             Jonah 3:9-19 KJV
                    Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn
                    away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
                    And God saw their works, that they turned from their
                    evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had
                    said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
             Exodus 32:14 KJV
                    And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to
                    do unto his people.
               Hosea 11:8 KJV
                    How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I
                    deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah?
                    how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned
                    within me, my repentings are kindled together.
               Jonah 4:2 KJV
                    And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O
                    LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my
                    country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I
                    knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow
                    to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee
                    of the evil.
             Jeremiah 26:3 KJV
                    If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from
                    his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which
                    I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of
                    their doings.
             Amos 7:3 KJV
                    The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith
                    the LORD.
             Amos 7:6 KJV
                    The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be,
                    saith the Lord GOD.
             Jeremiah 18:8-10 KJV
                    If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn
                    from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I
                    thought to do unto them.
                    And at what instant I shall speak concerning a
                    nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to
                    plant it;
                    If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice,
                    then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I
                    would benefit them.
             Zechariah 8:14-15 KJV
                    For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to
                    punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath,
                    saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not:
                    So again have I thought in these days to do well unto
                    Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not.
             2 Samuel 24:15-16 KJV
                    So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the
                    morning even to the time appointed: and there died of
                    the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy
                    thousand men.
                    And when the angel stretched out his hand upon
                    Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the
                    evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the
                    people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the
                    angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of
                    Araunah the Jebusite.
             Jeremiah 42:10 KJV
                    If ye will still abide in this land, then will I
                    build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant
                    you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the
                    evil that I have done unto you.
And of course, sometimes He does *not repent . . .
             Jeremiah 4:28 KJV
                    For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above
                    be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed
                    it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back
                    from it.
               Jeremiah 15:6 KJV
                    Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone
                    backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand
                    against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with

FAIREST LORD JESUS - Anonymous, from Munster Gesangbuch, translated by
Joseph A. Seiss - Public Domain
                      Fairest Lord Jesus,
                      Ruler of all nature,
                      O Thou of God and man the Son:
                      Thee will I cherish,
                      Thee will I honor,
                      Thou my soul's glory, joy, and crown.
                      Fair are the meadows,
                      Fairer still the woodlands,
                      Robed in the blooming garb of spring.
                      Jesus is fairer,
                      Jesus is purer,
                      Who makes the woeful heart to sing.
                      Fair is the sunshine,
                      Fairer still the moonlight,
                      And all the twinkling starry host.
                      Jesus shines brighter,
                      Jesus shines purer,
                      Than all the angels heaven can boast.

Blessings to you! May you thrive and prosper in everything you do.
